Nasoni has made another heroic act by re-releasing this Texas psychedelia classic that was originally released on the highly collectible Rockadelic Records in 1996. Liquid Sound Company is a group led by John Perez, the leading figure and guitarist in the doom band Solitude Aeturnus. He formed this band to be able to play more mind-expanding music. On one of the tracks on the album the singer of Solitude Aeturnus takes cares of the vocals, and John does a good job on others. At the time, John sent me a CD copy of this great album released on his own Brainticket label, and I wrote a review for the Colossus mag. My only, little complaint back then was the lack of keyboards or synthesizer, for example a Moog or some other analogue gear would have been nice. John then told me, that he just couldn’t get anybody to play synth, but on the second, even better LSC album even that little deficiency was taken care of.Exploring the Psychedelic has aged very well, and still sounds very good. There are some oriental influences, hypnotic and pretty minimal, peaceful stuff and also some heavy fuzz guitar action on the album. Naturally, there are also some psychedelic effects, sitar, backwards stuff and other similar things. A couple of the tracks are apparently the missing link between doom metal and psych… There are no weak numbers on this album. Musically the album remains just the same, so there are no different tracks or re-mixing, but the cover is no a gatefold with a lot of pictures and a long list of bands from the 60’s until this day who have been influential is there, too. This is a must have, if you don’t happen to have the original in your collection!

Sporadic Spiro-Gyra is the heavier of the two discs with a core sound that often reminds me of late 60's/early 70's jam rock, but within a space context. The first two songs, the title track and "Dead Men Don't Eat Calcium", are actually two parts of a single tune, and representative of the sound on this release. The first cut sets a driving Deep Purple sounding groove that is accompanied by trippy synth patterns. Dead Men, while retaining the same beat as the opening track goes off into more blatant Krautrock heavy territory with the last few minutes being a total liquid psych jam.

"Sprinklestrap" and "Syzygy" are similar to the opening tracks, but more bluesy. The effect is great as the synths are still dripping everywhere. Some interesting contrast is provided on "Bubbled Engines Of Nim" and "Recipe For Slow Tea", which are more electronic, and, sometimes more experimental, explorations. And Recipe, while still heavy, is a more overtly psychedelic rocker with layers of competing melodies.

Ptolemaic Terrascope

The PSE album - their second - has been actually pressed (rather than merely sold) by Delerium. This Bristol based band of hippy punksters have delivered a balanced LP which shows off various facets of their style rather than merely launching into and staying with the type of stoned electronic groove punctuated by the odd reggae anthem which so many modern festival bands seem to think go to make a 'psychedelic' record. "2 Leaving Demons" is a principally instrumental album with one or two numbers having definite leanings towards the strobe-like effect created by bubbly percussion and overplayed bleeps, but also featuring an organ(ic) opening number entitled "Docs Groove", shades of Edgar Broughton in "Rhythm Rhythm" and a distinctive cover of Richie Havens "Freedom" in which the chicks chorus drives the beat along at an accelerated rate of knots. And isn't that a Leslie guitar sound on the closing "Waves of Joy". Bless 'em all. (E.G. McMuffin).
